Silvered-tin phiale (libation bowl)

Greek

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 159

Decoration same as that of 39.11.4, having been hammered over the same mold. The subject of the wide outer band is the apotheosis of Herakles. He has died and is being transported to Mount Olympos, the home of the gods, by a cortege of four chariots driven by winged Nikes. The chariot of Dionysos is followed by those of Herakles, Athena, and Ares. The inner zone shows gods feasting on Mount Olympos at the wedding of Herakles to Hebe, a daughter of Zeus and Hera.
