Candace Wheeler (1827-1923), a serious flower painter and gardener before she embarked on her career as a textile designer, was extremely knowledgeable about the appearance and growing habits of plants. It was important to her that the flowers in her firm’s textile designs be accurately drawn. The color schemes, however, had to be useful for interior decoration, and therefore this daffodil fabric was produced not in naturalistic greens and golds but in shades of blue on cream and in a palette of dark reds. The craze for collecting blue-and-white china was at its height, and the blue daffodil fabric shown nearby harmonized well in a dining room lined with shelves of Chinese porcelain. Red curtains like this one were a welcome addition to a warm and cozy sitting room.
