This watercolor sketch is for the Forbes Memorial at the Church of St. Saviour in Brooklyn. The figures, from left to right, are: David, holding the sword used to cut off Goliath’s head; the Virgin Mary, carrying a pair of turtledoves, emblems of purity; Jesus Christ, cradling a dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit; St. Francis of Assisi, preaching to the birds; and Joan of Arc, dressed in full armor and clutching her battle standard. About 1905, Wilson moved his family to Briarcliff Manor, a small town thirty miles north of Manhattan. He continued to design windows for Tiffany Studios from this satellite location, sending drawings in by mail. This sketch is marked on the back, “Return to Frederick Wilson, Briarcliff Manor, NY.”
