No particular shape dominated in women's headwear in the late 1930s, and asymmetrical styles meant few hats could be easily described. The complex brim treatment of this hat by Sally Milgrim conveys a strong sense of integrative design. Both materials, straw and ribbon, have been pleated and contorted, uniting the hat body and the trimming into a refined whole. Milgrim's pairing of two cream materials allows the texture of each to contrast with the other and prevents any colorful distraction from her sophisticated design.
