Evening pumps

Department Store J. & J. Slater American

Not on view

The classic pump style we know today developed over the course of the 19th century, reaching maturity in the first decade of the 20th century. Aside from the rather high and narrow throat, this pair of evening pumps from about 1910 could be worn today without appearing anachronistic. Evening pumps at this time were often quite plain, with only a small bow or ornament to add interest. This pair is then distinctive by the relative elaborateness and intricacy of its frilled and beaded double bow.
