Italian jeweler Ugo Correani regularly worked with fashion designers such as Christian Lacroix in France and his fellow Italians Gianni Versace and Valentino Garavani, who shared his appreciation for the amusing “extroverted” accessory. He developed this whimsical jewelry set for Lagerfeld, another frequent collaborator throughout Correani’s lifetime; Lagerfeld frequently commissioned Correani for his namesake label in addition to his collections for Chloé, Chanel, and Fendi.

This matching bracelet and brooch are composed from a vibrant rainbow of resin lipsticks that humorously assert the decorative nature of cosmetic products. While Lagerfeld and Correani were both known for their postmodern sampling of objects and ideas, the tendency to inflate scale to invest drama was a particular strength of the jewelry designer. In the words of Lagerfeld, “He has a magic touch. No one can compare to him. . . . He’s modern, not afraid to be oversized, but with the right eye for proportion.”
