Another image
is one of the most personal of Federico's symbols: a row of tongues of
fire combined with the monogram fd in Gothic script. Often mistaken
for a heraldic device, the tongues stand for the "flames of love," worn
as a livery, or badge, by a group of young Venetian men called "the Inflamed Ones."
Federico became a member of this group when he lived in Venice during
his early teens. A memory of his youth, the "flames of love" livery was
a favorite with Federico.
