Another image is one of the most personal of Federico's symbols: a row of tongues of fire combined with the monogram fd in Gothic script. Often mistaken for a heraldic device, the tongues stand for the "flames of love," worn as a livery, or badge, by a group of young Venetian men called "the Inflamed Ones." Federico became a member of this group when he lived in Venice during his early teens. A memory of his youth, the "flames of love" livery was a favorite with Federico.
