Dado Panel

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 452

The inscription on the upper left side of this stucco panel reads, "In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate." It comes from the courtyard of one of the houses in the Sabz Pushan neighborhood of Nishapur. The presence of this inscription suggests the residence may have functioned as a small neighborhood mosque or perhaps even a madrasa (religious college). Religious texts, however, were also found on private residences.

Dado Panel, Stucco; carved, with some cast plaster elements
