Venus Anadyomene, or Venus Rising from the Sea

Engraver Valentine Green British
After James Barry Irish
Publisher John Boydell British

Not on view

The nude figure of Venus steps from clouds onto the shore, with shells and flowers at her feet. She wrings out her long hair, allowing it to stream down over her right arm. Cupid holds a bow and sits on a cloud behind her at right, as a pair of doves kiss on a cloud at left. In the water behind Venus a sea horse rears up at right, and a whale spouts at left. The print is based on a painting that Barry exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1772 (now Dublin City Gallery–The Hugh Lane).
