Kosode Fragment

Japan

Not on view

Because this fragment is small, it is rather difficult to imagine the entire kosode from this one piece. Several characteristics, however, suggest an early Edo date, among them the tide-swept arrangement of shells and seaweed. The original kosode's design may have resembled one from On Hiinagata, a kosode pattern book published in 1667.
