Theatrical Collar

China

Not on view

This unusual collar is thought to have been worn theatrically for the role of a woman. Many of the small jade ornaments attached to its black satin lobes are probably reused from centuries earlier: such ornaments decorated women’s headdresses in northern China during the Liao and Jin dynasties.
