By tradition, this pair of tables (67.262.2,.3) was made for the home of the prosperous sea captain Moses Rogers at 7 State Street in Lower Manhattan, opposite the Battery. The sensitivity of the cabinetmaker—possibly Duncan Phyfe (1768– 1854)—is apparent in the highly figured veneers on the aprons, applied in opposite directions on the two tables to enhance their effectiveness as a matched pair standing side by side.
