Scarab with lion and hieroglyph

Third Intermediate Period ?

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 130

The underside of this scarab shows a recumbent lion facing right. Above its back is a hieroglyph, the sign mn. The ancient Egyptians saw in the lion a symbol of royal power and authority, and it could therefore represent the pharaoh.
