Scarab Inscribed with a Blessing Related to Amun-Re

Third Intermediate Period

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 130

Scarabs bearing wishes and blessings related to divinities whose protection individuals wished to summon are particular popular during the late New Kingdom and the Third Intermediate Period (ca. 1295-664 B.C.).

The inscription on the base of this scarab bears a wish related to the sun god Amun-Re, hoping that he may watch over the amulet’s owner. The name Amun-Re is inscribed in the upper part of the composition, while the hieroglyphs at the bottom specify that the owner of the seal-amulet counted on the god to support and protect him every day.
