Third Intermediate Period

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 130

The underside of this scarab shows a mythological creature, the sphinx, composed of the body of a lion and the head of a man. The sphinx is seated, faces right and has two large wings that are spread above its back. It wears the Egyptian Double Crown and a horizontally hatched apron hangs over its chest.
