Fragment of funerary mask

Late Middle Kingdom

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 109

This fragment of gold leaf comes from a funerary mask inscribed with an offering formula on behalf of the Mistress of the House, Seneb. Masks of cartonnage became common by the beginning of the Middle Kingdom, and continued to be used throughout this era.
