Papyrus Plant with the Goddess Wadjet as a Cobra

Middle Kingdom

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 104

The cobra goddess holding a was scepter and curling around the stem of a papyrus plant had been erased from this relief under the "monotheistic" reign of King Akhenaten and was then recarved during the Ramesside Period. Both the erasure and recurving are easily recognized by the roughened surface area at the top. In Egyptian society, conflicts of this sort were commonly played out in the country’s temple.
