Kohl Tube Holder in the Form of a Papyrus Column

New Kingdom

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 119

This openwork kohl container would have held a tube for eye paint (kohl). The decoration around the bottom consists of papyrus plants. Around the center, the emblem of the goddess Hathor is flanked by two cats, and an image of the goddess Taweret appears on the opposite side.
