These medallions depict Liu Hai, a legendary character in popular Daoism who is said to have lived in the tenth century. In one version of the legend, he had a three-legged toad to convey him wherever he wished. Occasionally the toad would escape down a well, but Liu Hai would fish it out using a line baited with coins. Here, he stands on the toad, a string of coins above his head.
