Trompette Demilune

German

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 680

The curved form of this natural trumpet enabled the player to insert fingers into the bell and, by closing it off to varying degrees, alter the notes of the harmonic series to produce a scale. This stopping technique is similar to that used by hand horn players, but the smaller size of the trumpet’s bell made it less effective.
