Huang says in his inscription that the painting is done in the style of Wen Zhengming (1470–1559), but the adaptations to 19th century taste are clear. Color is heightened, figure and ground shift ambiguously and the dense composition is demarcated by a strong, regularly accented line.

Huang was a minor official but at the age of fifty, he succumbed to his love of painting and became a professional artist in Shanghai.
