Resnick had just been released from active duty in the American army when he made this small painting. Much of his prewar work was accidentally destroyed, but even without it he caught up with the biomorphic, pastel-colored style practiced after the war by his close friend Willem de Kooning. Both were looking to Arshile Gorky for inspiration, and both were working under the impact of Picasso's Guernica, which had been shown in New York in 1939.
