This table was part of a group of furnishings designed by the Eameses for the La Fonda del Sol Restaurant, opened at Rockefeller Center in 1961. The interior of the restaurant was designed by Alexander Girard, who shared with Charles and Ray both a commitment to modern American design and a connection to the Herman Miller Furniture Company in Zeeland, Michigan, for whom Girard designed textiles and furniture. With its sleek steel pedestal base and polished marble top, the "La Fonda" table represents a more formal, luxurious iteration of the Eames' modern yet approachable aesthetic. Against Girard's exuberantly patterned and colored interior, the table retained the characteristic Eames emphasis on functionality, simplicity, and ease of use.
