Settee #3/87

Sam Maloof American

Not on view

One of the stalwarts of the Studio Furniture Movement, Sam Maloof turned fine handcrafted furniture—particularly his rocking chairs and other seating forms like this settee—into a successful business. The striking combination of richly grained tiger maple and dark ebony was used to similar effect during the Biedermeier period in Austria. The curved lines of the chair also relate to the ancient Greek klismos.
