Venus and Cupid

possibly Paul Hubner

Not on view

This plaquette depicts Venus and Cupid in a landscape, set in an oval, stylized wreath. While Paul Hübner has been identified as the possible author of this piece, it has also been attributed to an anonymous South German artist, possibly from Augsburg and dating from the late sixteenth century. Other versions are in Florence (Museo Stefano Bardini), Lyon (Musée des Beaux-Arts), Munich (Bayerisches Nationalmuseum), and Paris (Musée du Louvre). This object is an early, possibly seventeenth-century, aftercast.
