Coronation of the Virgin

Paris, France France

Not on view

The book of hours to which this beautiful illumination belonged must have been a deluxe work commissioned by a wealthy patron. Both sides of the leaf are decorated with elaborate floral borders, and all the pages of the original manuscript probably were illuminated. This "Coronation of the Virgin" depends on a composition by the Limbourg brothers, the Franco-Netherlandish illuminators responsible for the "Belles Heures" of Jean de Berry. This leaf, however, was illuminated several decades later, probably in Paris.
