Taddeo Zuccaro Italian

Not on view

This drawing is a preparatory study for a ceiling fresco in the Frangipani Chapel in San Marcello al Corso, Rome, executed by Taddeo Zuccaro between 1558 and 1566. The densely packed composition and exaggerated poses of the figures exemplify the Mannerist style that dominated Roman painting in the second half of the sixteenth century and of which Taddeo was a leading proponent.

The Martyrdom of Saint Paul, Taddeo Zuccaro (Italian, Sant'Angelo in Vado 1529–1566 Rome), Pen and brown and gray ink, brown wash, over black chalk, heightened with white, on buff paper.
