Ear Ornament (Tikhrazin), One of a Pair

These Berber ear ornaments may have been inserted into the ear or attached to a diadem with chains, and positioned so as to hang on each side of the face, near the ear. This style is known as tikhrazin and is popular in the Rif mountain region. This pair has been ornamented with colored glass, and green and yellow enamel. The orange plastic pendants are an imitation of coral, a more typical material for Berber jewelry, which was thought to possess much baraka, or blessing.
