Textile Fragment with Sailing Ships

Not on view

This fully reversible fragment of a complex double‑weave textile shows sailing ships, swimming ducks, and leaping fish on a minuscule scale in white or red, respectively. The sailors appear to be European, reflecting a typical Safavid motif, which developed as a result of the extensive maritime trade between Europe and Asia.
