"Two Old Men in Discussion Outside a Hut", Folio from the Davis Album

Painting by 'Ali Quli Jabbadar Iranian

Not on view

Like several other folios in the Davis album, this painting is framed by a border of naturalistically rendered sprays of flowers in vibrant colors. Here, the artist blends Persian, Indian and European modes of painting: the composition and treatment of the faces is Indian, the style is European in character, featuring one-point perspective, chiaroscuro and modeling. The composition is based on another painting in this album, "A Nighttime Gathering," by Muhammad Zaman, whose distinctive farangi-sazi (European mode) style was influential in the late seventeenth century.
