Carpet Fragment

Not on view

This wool carpet fragment is decorated with an angular pattern in blue, green, yellow, and black on a red ground. It contains a band Kufic characters in yellow on a dark blue ground. These fragments from a rug were found at Fustat (old Cairo) in Egypt. Since there is little doubt that the rug is of Spanish manufacture, this object is one of several which illustrates the trade relationship between Tulunid and Fatimid Egypt and Muslim Spain.
