Panel from a Minbar

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 454

Although the pattern of this group of panels appeared as early as the late twelfth century in Azerbaijan and is recorded as late as 1480–81, it enjoyed a particular vogue in Cairo between 1330 and 1350. A number of minbars in Cairo with this pattern and from this period bear very close resemblance to these pieces.
