Saint Michael; The Mass of Saint Gregory; Saint Jerome

Master of the Saint Catherine Legend Netherlandish

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 635

These three diminutive panels come from a group attributed to an artist now known as the Master of the Saint Catherine Legend, who worked in Brussels. They once formed part of a larger ensemble, much of which is lost today. In one scene, the figure of Christ miraculously appears on the altar table, surrounded by the implements used to torture him before his crucifixion. The painting gives a sense of the visionary experiences that late medieval Christians sought as they interacted with sacred images.
