Not on view

The lithograph that adorns the cover of this sheet music is based on Church's monumental painting "The Heart of the Andes (09.95), now in the Museum's American Wing. George William Warren composed the related music after seeing the work in the artist's studio, before it went on public display in 1859, causing a sensation. Warren's score for two pianos premiered in New York on March 28, 1863, performed by the composer and Luois Moreau Gottschanlk (1829–1869), and the sheet music was published the same year. The painting itself traveled for two years and was shown in London, Edinburgh, Brooklyn and otherl American cities.
