Willmore's engraving is based on a large watercolour by Turner from 1822, which is now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Published by Ernest Gambart (1814–1902) in tandem with another single-sheet print "Hastings" (by Wallis), and also in the Met's collection (X.770; X.771), they were the last prints published in Turner's lifetime; he died just a month after their joint publication. One critic writing in the monthly periodical ''The Art Journal'' commended the pair of coastal views which were found to have been "very skilfully engraved, and are likely to find a numerous class of admirers." In particular the periodical admired the print's rendering of rain on water caused by a ''heavy shower of rain, that raises up countless bubbles to the surface." Willmore was a prolific engraver after Turner and continued to produce prints after the painter's death in 1851.
