With its soaring height, broad expanse of mirror glass, and elaborate turnings, moldings, and jig-saw cutouts, this étagère was likely the focal point of a parlor. The shelves originally held small decorative objects: the ceramics, glass, sculpture, and other “collectibles” that became highly prized, readily available, and conspicuously displayed in the homes of nineteenth-century Americans.
