Maffet Ledger

Southern and Northern Cheyenne

Not on view

The Maffet Ledger, a book of 105 drawings created by as many as 22 Northern and Southern Cheyenne warrior artists, records their exploits in battle. Among these contributors is Howling Wolf (1849–1927), a noted Southern Cheyenne artist and one of those imprisoned at Fort Marion in Saint Augustine, Florida, from 1875 to 1878 for resisting expansion onto the Southern Plains. George West Maffet Sr. (1856–1924), editor and proprietor of The Cheyenne Transporter, a journal published in Darlington, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma), acquired and bound the drawings.
