Brotmeyer is a droll collagist who works with a combination of approaches including postmodern appropriation, caricature, and Duchampian "assisted ready-made" procedures. Here, starting with a typical commercial photographic portrait of the 1890s, Brotmeyer added paint crosshatching à la Jasper Johns, rabbit fur, and Albrecht Durer’s monogram. The wry additions transform the "cabinet card" likeness into a refreshing and thought-provoking mixed-media portrait that comments on the stylistic language of both anonymous nineteenth-century studio photography and name-brand artists.
