This chair and a matching one in the collection (1971.17.2) are from a set that descended in the family of the architectural historian Henry-Russell Hitchcock (1903–1987). A number of documented chairs similar to these examples were made by Ephraim Haines (active 1790–1811) and Henry Connelly (1770–1826) of Philadelphia.
