Fragment of a terracotta neck-amphora (jar)

Attributed to the Painter of the Geneva Orestes

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 171

Woman with basket on her head in a finerary structure

The fragment belongs to a funerary representation. With her right hand, the woman is holding onto one of the columns supporting a funerary structure. On her head, she carries a shallow basket hung with fillets that she will probably bring to the tomb. The fragment is notable for its fine drawing and polychromy as well as for the basket that so resembles a sombrero.
