Gold ornaments with acorns and bees

East Greek

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 152

The delicate plaques would probably have been sewn onto a textile. The combination of acorns and bees is long-lived in the Greek world. This motif recurs on an exceptional gold phiale (libation bowl; 62.11.1) dated two centuries later and on view in the gallery of Greek art of the fourth century on the main floor.
