Terracotta alabastron (perfume vase)

Attributed to the Painter of New York 21.131

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 171

Amazon and youth leaning on a staff

Alabastra decorated with an Amazon enjoyed a brief period of popularity at the end of the sixth century B.C. On this vase, there is no evident connection between the two figures. The presence of the youth may indicate that Amazon alabastra were favored by youths rather than women.
