Three spoons

Roman

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 169

All three spoons, two in silver and the other in brass, have the same shape bowl as the spoon with the folding knife (19.192.64) shown here. The brass spoon also has a finial shaped like an ox hoof that is similar to that on a fork (26.31.497) also displayed in this case. Knives, forks, and spoons, however, were not common on Roman dining tables; most people ate with their hands and used small dipping bowls to wash their fingers.
