Marble cavetto capital

Greek, Attic

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 153

This capital was part of a funerary or votive stele; it surmounted a tall shaft and supported a separately carved finial—presumably a sphinx. The cavetto capital has a more elongated shape than the earlier example exhibited nearby.
