Glass cinerary urn with lid

Roman

Not on view

Urn: Translucent blue-green; handles in same color.

Everted rim, folded down, round, up, and in, with groove around top of mouth, forming a solid collar; flaring mouth; narrow, concave neck; large, piriform body; splayed hollow foot; shallow concave bottom; two vertical, arched M-shaped handles, attached on opposite sides of upper body, each made of a thick trail, applied as a large circular pad, drawn across body from left to right, and trailed off back along top of handle.

Broken and repaired, with many holes and much of one side of body missing, and some areas of fill; pinprick bubbles; dulling, some pitting, patches of thick creamy brown weathering, and iridescence..

Lid: Translucent pale blue-green.

Slightly inverted, rounded, and downturned rim; bulging shoulder; concave outer side, then conical; cylindrical, largely solid stem; circular, slightly conical knob with rounded lip; small tooled indent in center of knob on top.

Complete, except for two weathered chips in rim and two internal cracks running from stem to top of side; some pinprick and larger bubbles; slight dulling, faint iridescence, and patches of whitish weathering with some soil encrustation.

The lid does not fit the urn when placed upright. It may, however, originally have been placed upside down like a funnel lid.
