Terracotta stamnos (jar)

Greek, Attic

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 157

Although vases with painted scenes generally receive the most attention, their black-glazed counterparts deserve equal consideration. The proportion and functionality of the shapes as well as the rich gloss of the surfaces stand out in unmitigated purity. They represent an important aspect of the Attic potters' production.
