Fragment from the neck of a terracotta amphora (jar)

Cypriot

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 171

Panel with quadruped

The animal has been identified as a lion, which would have been known to the Cypriot artist only through representations, many of them undoubtedly Near Eastern. It is interesting that the body bears the same lozenge pattern as one of the figures on the amphora fragment 74.51.5861.
