Terracotta woman

Cypriot

Not on view

This figure and 74.51.1579 are associated with the cult of Astarte, the Near Eastern fertility goddess, on Cyprus. A priestess or votary, the woman wears a thin garment and considerable jewelry: ear caps with earrings, a nose ring, and three necklaces, one with a large circular pendant. Her headdress has tassels that frame the forehead. She holds a bird over her abdomen.
