Mirror

Silversmith Johann Valentin Gevers German
Medallions possibly by Johann Andreas Thelot German

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 531

It is thought that the female bust crowned with a laurel wreath engraved in the crest is a portrait of the woman for whom this elaborate mirror was executed. The allegorical figures of Prudence (right) and Temperance (left), flanking the crest, may symbolize the owner's virtues.

Mirror, Johann Valentin Gevers (German, ca. 1662–1732), Oak and pine veneered with tortoiseshell, silver, silver gilt, and green-stained ivory; mirror glass, German, Augsburg
