Charles Le Brun’s design sequence alternated narrower carpets featuring landscapes at each end, such as this one, and wider carpets with depictions of allegorical bas-reliefs. Of all the Grande Galerie carpets in American public collections, this example is the best preserved. Used by the French ambassador to the Spanish court at Madrid, it escaped destruction during the French Revolution and ended up at the monastery in Santiago de Compostela, reemerging in the 1930s during the Spanish Civil War. Jayne Wrightsman, the prominent twentieth-century American collector of French decorative arts, bought the carpet in Paris in 1955 and presented it to The Met in 1976.
